Liu Shenggang

Prof. Liu Shenggang was elected as an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980, has been a Fellow of IEEE since 1998, and became a member of the International Electromagnetic Academy, MIT in 1991, member of IRMMW-Hz International Conference and K.J.BUTTON International Award Committee. From 1986-2001, he was dean of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. In 2008 he became a member of the Presidium of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2014 he was served as chief academician for Guangdong academician expert workstation and in 2015, he was hired as dean of SITTI.

Prof. Liu has served as member of the standing committee of China Association for Science and Technology, Vice President of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, Chairman of the Vacuum Electronics Society of China. From 1980-1994, he was senior scientist of UNDP. He is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor of visiting professor of domestic and overseas universities in USA, Germany, UK, Italy, Korea, Japan and HK. He is a doctoral tutor of "Physics Electronics", "Optics", "Plasma Physics" and "Optical Engineering" and other disciplines. He put forward a series of new concepts on terahertz science and technology, electron cyclotron pulse, free electron laser, high power umbrella microwave electronics, microwave plasma electronics and so on, and established relevant theories and carried out experimental research, did a lot of internationally recognized originality and groundbreaking work. He wrote four books, published more than 300 papers, widely cited by domestic and foreign counterparts. He was invited to more than 30 times in the international academic conference to do the General Assembly report, won the national and provincial and ministerial level science and technology awards more than 30 items. In 1979 he was named "National Model Worker", in 1985 won the "National Outstanding Educator" title, and become the first "May 1st Labor Medal" winner, twice won the "National Outstanding Contributions of Young Experts" title. In 1999 he won the Tan Kah Kee Information Technology Science Award, in 2003 he won the international K. J. BUTTON Award, the first Chinese scientist to receive this award.

Academician Liu Shenggang has always been unswervingly promoted China's terahertz science and technology research from 1991, more than 20 years. In 2005 he was commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Natural Science Foundation to hold the 270th Xiangshan Science Conference, as the theme of "Terahertz Science and Technology" was considered a milestone in the development of THz. He was the director of the Terahertz Expert Committee of the Chinese Institute of Electronics; he founded the Shenzhen International Conference on Advanced Science and Technology and the International Committee in 2006 with the scientists from home and abroad. In 2007 he also founded the first international terahertz professional journal "Terahertz Science and Technology".

Academician Liu Shenggang is the founder of the internationally recognized terahertz research ("Terahertz Pioneer Shenggang Liu", IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology, 2014, Vol.4, No.1, home page). In 2006, IRMMW-THz International Conference held in Shanghai, China, he served as honorary chairman of the General Assembly (which is the first time in the history of the establishment of honorary chairman). In 2016, he received the Exceptional Award of the IRMMW-THz International Conference for his outstanding achievement in the terahertz field (the first Chinese to win the award).
