Prof. Liu Shenggang was elected as an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980, has been a Fellow of IEEE since 1998, and became a member of the International Electromagnetic Academy, MIT in 1991, member of IRMMW-Hz International Conference and K.J.BUTTON International Award Committee. During 1986 to 2001, he was the dean of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Since 2008, he has been a member of the Presidium of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2014 he was served as the chief academician of Guangdong academician expert workstation and in 2015, he was hired as the dean of SITTI.
Prof. Liu has served as a member of the standing committee of China Association for Science and Technology, Vice President of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, Chairman of the Vacuum Electronics Society of China. During 1980-1994, he was a senior scientist of UNDP. He has also been a Distinguished Visiting Professor of domestic and overseas universities in USA, Germany, UK, Italy, Korea, Japan and HK. He has been a doctoral tutor for research subjects of "Physics Electronics", "Optics", "Plasma Physics" and "Optical Engineering". He presented a series of new concepts on terahertz science and technology, electron cyclotron pulse, free electron laser, high power umbrella microwave electronics, microwave plasma electronics etc., and established relevant theories. He carried out many experimental researches, a lot of which were internationally recognized originality and groundbreaking work. He has published four books and more than 300 papers, which are widely cited by domestic and foreign counterparts. He was invited as a keynote speaker for more than 30 times in international academic conferences., won national, provincial and ministerial level science and technology awards for more than 30 items. He was named the "National Model Worker" and the "National Outstanding Educator" in year 1979 and 1985, respectively. Besides, he won the first "May 1st Labor Medal", and was awarded twice the title of the "National Outstanding Contributions of Young Expert". In 1999, he won the Tan Kah Kee Information Technology Science Award. In 2003, he won the international K. J. BUTTON Award, he was the first Chinese scientist to receive this award.
Academician Liu Shenggang has always been unswervingly promoting China's terahertz science and technology research since 1991, for more than 20 years. In 2005 he was commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Natural Science Foundation to hold the 270th Xiangshan Science Conference, with the theme of "Terahertz Science and Technology" and the conference was considered a milestone in the development of THz. He was the director of the Terahertz Expert Committee of the Chinese Institute of Electronics. In 2006, he held the Shenzhen International Conference on Advanced Science and Technology and founded the International Committee, of which members were scientists from home and abroad. In 2007 he also started the first issue of "Terahertz Science and Technology", which is the first international professional journal on terahertz technology
Academician Liu Shenggang is the founder of the internationally recognized terahertz research ("Terahertz Pioneer Shenggang Liu", IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology, 2014, Vol.4, No.1, home page). In 2006, IRMMW-THz International Conference held in Shanghai, China, he served as the honorary chairman of the General Assembly (which is the first time in the history of the establishment of honorary chairman). In 2016, he received the Exceptional Award of the IRMMW-THz International Conference for his outstanding achievements in the terahertz field (the first Chinese to win the award).
